At least 31 bodies have been discovered in 12 clandestine graves in the municipality of Cosamaloapan, located towards the south of Veracruz. It is reported that all of the bodies show signs of torture and are mutilated.
The information was disclosed on Wednesday, June 18 by the head of the Regional Deputy State Attorney, General Arturo Herrera Cantillo, who said that some of the bodies “had been buried for more than a month”.
The corpses were found on Monday, June 16 during a military patrol in an abandoned ranch called El Diamante, located on the outskirts of the municipalities of Tres Valles and Cosamaloapan, the official added.
Elements of the Mexican Army and Navy are currently guarding the area.
Meanwhile on Wednesday, people with missing relatives or friends approached the authorities to find out if their loved ones are among the victims. As reported by the Veracruz Attorney, “some of the people might be native to this region”.
Authorities have said that the number of the corpses could increase.
Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel and CJNG operate in Veracruz.
