The second District Court Federal criminal process based in Jalisco, ordered the release of Martín Alejandro Beltrán Coronel or Martín Beltrán with the alias "El Águila" for violation of the principle of presumption of innocence and the fundamental right of inviolability of the domicile. The acquittal ruling in favor of the nephew of Ignacio Coronel Villareal  on charges of organized crime.

Officials earlier portrayed him as Coronel's successor.

The Federal Judiciary Council said late Wednesday the court had acquitted the nephew and four other co-defendants because of procedural violations in the case.

Martin Beltran Coronel had been charged with organized crime and the other four faced money laundering charges.

The council said that soldiers who detained the five arrested  in May 2011 had entered a home without a search warrant. It also said that protected witnesses had improperly identified the five after being shown photo albums of potential suspects.

Beltran Coronel was arrested 10 months after the death of his uncle, Nacho Coronel, in a subdivision in Zapopan, Jalisco (July 2010). He was accused of assuming the operations of his uncles organization and was identified as one of 4 top leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, at the same level as Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Juan José Esparragoza alias “El Azul”.

Martín Beltrán maintained control of the criminal group known as the Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, which formed part of the criminal organization of Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel..

He was involved in the transfer of drugs bought in Central and South America and shipped toward the United States, in operations through the route of the Pacific, and  he maintained his center of operations in Jalisco and Colima. In these actions Martín Beltran was in collaboration with his cousin José Ángel Carrasco Coronel, whom was nicknamed "El Changel".

On July 29, 2010 elements of the national defense Secretariat (Sedena) gunned down Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel Villarreal  at his home located at Paseo de los Parques 1464, in Zapopan, Jalisco. According to reports provided by the authorities, 12 of the 13 bullets that struck the criminal hit the left side of his body,  8 of them at the top, in the area of the heart. The army said that they were called to his mansion after an anonymous complaint and fired in self defense, after Coronel had killed a soldier with a shot from the inside of his bedroom.  (click image to enlarge)
