The release of Netflix hit “Narcos” has been delayed until August. When Netflix announced the delay they also said it would be the final season, after all it is the real life story of Colombian cocaine king Pablo Escobar and after his death that would signal the natural conclusion.
I for one was disappointed, and felt strongly Netflix was missing a great opportunity to continue the story as it unfolded in the real life world of narcos…that being the emergence of the Mexican cartels, beginning with the Guadalajara Cartel up to modern day cartels and its leaders. Who can argue that the story of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, Rafael Caro Quintero, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, La Barbie or El Chapo Guzman would be less intriguing? Not to mention the dozens of other characters, the Trevino brothers, Mencho, La Tuta to name a few.
Mexico is a fountainhead of seemingly unlimited material of real life drama that could be adapted for the big screen as well as television.
While it may not offer the complete story of Mexican Cartels, Netflix and Univison announced a joint effort that will be presented next year, a drama based on life of Sinaloa Cartel chief, El Chapo (Joaquin Guzman Loera).
“We are thrilled to partner with the award-winning Univision Story House on the timely and globally relevant drama series based on the life story of El Chapo,” Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, said in a statement.
The deal also includes bring Netflix “Narcos” to television through Univision.
Netflix users will have to wait its turn to vie the Chapo series, as the Univison division of “UniMas” will get the first release rights, sometime in 2017.
By then there should be a few productions released of the narco story that keeps on giving.
In fact, this is the second series based on El Chapo to be announced this month. Two weeks ago the History Channel unveiled its plan to develop “Cartel” with “Narcos” creator Chris Brancato.
The El Chapo saga would bewoefully incomplete without the Guadalajara Cartel story.It is unfortunate that a big production house, could not think larger than headlines, and place effort in researching the Mexican cartel story and offer an accurate portrayal of what has happened in Mexico from the 80s to present day.Giving a true historical account would be interesting, shocking, entertaining and educating to Mexico’s neighbor north of its border.
