Tamaulipas violence continues as internal clashes flare

Lucio R. Borderland Beat with C.E.M.

The regional leader of the Gulf Cartel (CDG) is having trouble keeping his troops in line, having to contend with some of his close friends and troops who have turned their weapons against him.

The most recent episode of the fighting started when Julián “El Toro” Loisa Salinas, (left) ordered a change in the structure of command of the criminal organization in the area immediately south of Starr County and the cities of western Hidalgo County, commonly known as La Ribereña.

This change is attributed to the kidnapping, torture and murder of Gumercindo “El Aguila” Gamez Villarreal (below).

The man known as “El Aquila” had been operating on both sides of the US border with Mexico, and recently he had been the commander in charge of the rural community of Díaz Ordaz, south of Sullivan City, Texas. The region has been considered to be a valuable transit point for CDG. The death of El Aguila has resulted in  his followers openly seeking to establish a new commander in the region, causing clashes that has spread terror in the region.

Although there no official word, common in Tamaulipas, this past week, two large convoys of Gulf Cartel gunmen clashed near the rural town Arguelles, not far from Diaz Ordaz. Reports from residents released information about the shooting at vehicles. They say  armed men in vehicles chased each other while shooting weapons throughout the area.
