Ivan and Alfredo Guzman Salazar, Edgar Coronel Aispuro and Ivan Gastelum aka "El Cholo"; sons, brother-in-law, and Lieutenant of Joaquin Guzman Loera, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, are requesting clarification for the simultaneous actions that led to the ambush against the Mexican Army which occurred on Sept.30 near Badiraguato, Sinaloa, an area legendarily dominated by "El Chapo Guzman", that resulted in the death of five soldiers and ten more wounded.
The lawyer Jose Refugio Rodriguez confirmed to Proceso that on Oct.1 the sons of the Cartel head wanted to make a public posture that they had no relation to the incident. This was before General Alfonso Duarte of the Ninth Military Zone made signs that the facts confirmed the suspicion of the participation of Alfredo and Ivan Guzman Salazar, sons of the first marriage between Guzman Loera and Alejandrina Salazar.
In respect to the posture of Joaquin Guzman Loera, Rodriguez said that he had none and doubted that he had learned of the attack perpetrated in Badiraguato.
"The sons of Joaquin Guzman Loera, Ivan and Alfredo want clarification of the regretable facts that led to the loss of life of the soldiers by the cowardly ambush. They are soliciting an imparcial and objective investigation to clarify the facts and regret the death of the soldiers in the line of duty." said the lawyer. This Oct.1, the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) released a communication about the attack by the armed group against the military convoy in Bacacoragua, in Badiraguato. According to the official version, the soldiers were transporting Julio Oscar Ortiz Vega, who said he is the cousin of El Chapo and was wounded in a confrontation.
The ambush of the convoy by the gunmen resulted in the death of five soldiers and the rescue of Ortiz Vega.
As to the question of the motive of Guzman's sons wanting a clarification of the facts, Rodriguez said
"No one wants to be pursued by the Government for something that they did not do". Guzman Loera's sons are trying to send a message "When they arrested our father they didn't do this, why now?"
"Hopefully, the Military will not make a witch hunt with abuse of power to saciate their vengance over the pain of the loss of their comrades,"said the lawyer.
In August Ivan and Alfredo Guzman Salazar were kidnapped in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco presumably by the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG). According to information published at the time by Proceso their release occurred after an economic and territorial negotiation, according to those associated with El Chapo Guzman.
The Brother-in-Law and Lieutenant
In a coordinated action, Carlos Castillo, lawyer of Edgar Coronel Aispuro, Brother-in-law of El Chapo Guzman and Ivan Gastelum aka "El Cholo" tells us that both want the matter of the attack on the military clarified, although no authority has publicly related them with the incident as of now.
Edgar is the youngest brother of Emma Coronel Aispuro, the (un)official spouse (he still gives the name of his first wife as his only legal wife) of El Chapo Guzman. She was detained Oct.30, 2015 accused of helping Guzman Loera escape the maximum security prison, Altiplano, in July of 2015.
Meanwhile, "El Cholo"was arrested along with his boss Guzman Loera on Jan.8, 2016 in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, while they were both trying to escape during the search for "El Chapo". Gastelum, is named as the head of the armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Army says he is responsible for hanging a series of "narco mantas" or posters with death threats against General Antonio Gurrola, an operative of the Dept of Defense (SEDENA) in 2012 and his girlfriend, Maria Susana Flores, who was Miss Sinaloa in 2012.
''We deeply regret the facts and like all of Mexican society demand a thorough investigation in order to find those responsible.", said attorney Castillo. Coronel Aispuro and Gastelum are currently being held in custody in Cefereso Number 1.
"Talking with them, (Coronel Aispuro and Gastelum), it is obvious that that they are 100% focused on the judicial process which involves various criminal proceedings for which they will be kept in custody.", added the lawyer ,"They do not want to see their unfortunate legal situation affected by malicious accusations in the sense of either of them being involved in any way in these events."
Castillo affirmed that his clients had no connection with the attack on the Military or Ortiz Vega, who was rescued during the ambush. Proceso questioned the lawyer as to why his clients were requesting such clarifications if the Government was not asking about their involvement.
"Some news reports have identified the sons of Mr. Guzman as being responsible for the incident and because of this, before more journalists tie them to any version of the unfortunate events, they have asked me to make a complete clarification on their behalf.
He said that since their arrests, both the son-in-law of El Chapo Guzman and Gastelum have suffered
"bad treatment and violations of their human rights".
