CJNG is the criminal organization with a presence in more states, even more states than el Cartel del
Pacifico (Sinaloa), according to PGR. The CJNG violence erupted in Guanajuato on May 1, 2015, when a failed attempt to apprehend El Mencho resulted in a series of narcobloqueos on behalf of this organization in Jalisco, Michoacan, Colima, and Guanajuato. During this particular incident, CJNG burned four vehicles and several businesses in Guanajuato.
On that occasion, members of CJNG shot down a Mexican Air Force helicopter in Villa Purificacion municipality, which resulted in the deaths of 8 soldiers and one federal police officer. Between 2014 and 2015, the authorities in Guanajuato admitted to arresting 257 persons that were allegedly member of CJNG. Guanajuato previously had the presence of other criminal organizations such as Los Zetas and Caballeros Templarios. The battle fought by the federal government against these two organizations resulted in their disappearance from this jurisdiction and allowed for CJNG to become the dominant criminal organization in Guanjuato.
During the last few months, Guanajuato has experienced a wave of violence which has increased the number of murders. Compared to 2015, there is over a 10% increase in homicides.
