Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat
Just when I think something is solved…..
We were riding high and smoothly after my last effort to recruit help for Borderland Beat.
Fact of the matter is, we are now hurting ...big time. The blog work cannot be on the shoulders of 2 or 3, we need a strong team of at least 4 regular contributors, that are willing to contribute 3 posts a week, and another 3 or 4 folks that will contribute a 1 or two a week.
We also have an option of Guest Reporters. Anyone can become a guest reporter. And no set number of contribution is expected, it may even be that you want to share something and it is a onetime event. It all is appreciated.
Truth is, Borderland Beat will not be able to exist if we do not get solid commitments. I have been on a semi medical leave and continue to have treatments.
I have not publicly discussed my issue, but on last July 3rd, I awoke at 3am with excruciating pain in my legs and became non-ambulatory. No more walking, no more standing, driving etc. It is an autoimmune disorder that attacked the nerves in my lower extremities and did quite a bit of damage.
That said, I am doing great. The July attack was my second. And by far worse than the previous attack. But I am no longer using the wheelchair, unless I am having a bad day physically, but rare, and even the walker I am using far less and trying to strengthen my good nerves and muscles. Luckily I was in pretty good condition. I can now walk “a ways” without aid, but need to be near a rail or wall “In case”. I believe I am going to be able to walk one day and drive and travel!
Sadly, I tried getting down the staircase myself after the attack and fell, broke my leg, and ankle, so until that heals completely….don’t know the true prognosis. BUT honestly I am doing much better than expected. I thought I should explain to you all why I do drive bys and no longer at BB each day.
DD has picked up my duties and Otis has been invaluable. Wachito and the others were great but it is not easy to work for free, one has to believe in the project, and I think the project created by Buggs is an important link for English language people to know the true scope of Mexican Organized Crime.
DD is going on a leave of absence. I will push myself to do more. But that is not the answer. And Otis is in law school and cannot do more.
So I ask those who signed up last time and sorta disappeared, let me know via EMAIL what your plan is.
And for those of you wanting to help….please let me know or DD or Otis. Our email addys are at the upper right.
Thank you all for your good wishes, and if I have not replied to your message please forgive me, sometimes it isn’t easy. But I will try to do more, and better. But honestly, the future of BB does not look good.
